K9APE® Machine Vision Inspection System For Flat Surfaces

K9APE® Machine Vision Inspection Systems are readily adapted for inspection of printing on flat or curved surfaces. Inspection can occur during or after the manufacturing or printing process.

The image shown below is from a 2 inch (51 mm.) x 4 inch (102 mm) rub test plastic sample. The rub test comprises rubbing a sample sheet across a portion of a recently printed plastic-coated sheet under controlled conditions to determine whether the printed ink was properly applied and dried. With perfect printing, no ink should be transferred to the sample sheet. The image below illustrates an example where a visible amount of ink was transferred to the sample sheet.

Highly Compressed Image of A Printing Rub Test Sample Sheet

One objective of image analysis is to quantify which ink and the amount of ink in a three-color printing operation was transferred to the sample sheet. Color data from a sample sheet shown above and from an unused sample sheet were collected. These data were then processed by differential signature analysis to obtain the chart shown below. These data quantify the amounts of cyan, magenta and yellow ink transferred to the rub test sample sheet.

Data can be used to generate output signals for control of ink pigment/vehicle ratio, press speed, cylinder pressure and drier temperature. Data can also be logged for warranty purposes or for conducting experiments on manufacturing variables.

These images were captured with an EPIX® PIXCI® Model SV4 Imaging Board. EPIX® XCAP™ Imaging Software was used for image formatting. The original files have been JPEG-compressed for display here.

Printing and manufacturing defects are readily detected and measured by our K9APE® Machine Vision Inspection Systems. Images better than JPEG-compressed quality can be obtained during manufacture.
